I have been walking Chambers Creek Properties for years. I have been carrying a camera since 2009. With the US Open coming to the Chambers Bay Golf Course, which is part of the property, I have decided to share a picture each day for the 365 days leading up to the tournament. The US Open is scheduled to begin on June 18, 2015. As of today, we are 322 days away. Western Sandpipers (Calidris mauri) are among our most common sandpipers. I believe Least Sandpipers are seen a little more often, but not by much. Western and Least Sandpipers are similar. They can both be found along the beach. The primary difference is leg color. Western Sandpipers are the ones with the black feet. Western Sandpipers might be the trickier of the two to identify because we have other sandpipers with black feet. I have seen both Dunlins and Sanderlings in the area. Dunlins are larger with a dark patch underneath during breeding season. Sanderlings are seen on non-breeding plumage with straighter bills, black-and-white appearance, and black in the armpit region.
