Martin Update - September 5, 2014

In my last two walks on the South Beach, I have not seen any Purple Martins. In past years, Martins seem to have left in August. I'm not surprised that I'm not finding them, and I haven't been expecting them.

I am going to treat the Martin situation as though it has been resolved. The Martins appear to be through with the dock, and I still have not seen any equipment brought in to remove it. While removal of a known nesting location could be viewed as an inconvenience for the species, the impact would not be nearly as significant as if the dock were removed during nesting season.

What does all of this mean, and why is it being posted on my photo blog? It's because my handling of Martin pictures will likely change. I felt like I should explain how I will be handling these pictures in the future.

I'm leaving existing copyright protection as is. That means existing pictures will retain their Creative Common Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike Licenses. Assuming things go as planned, future pictures will have "All rights reserved" attached to them. This is the typical copyright that applies to most work. I will also likely cease usage of a Purple Martin album. The current album will remain with minimal modifications (I will likely change the description).

You never know. The process has clearly not gone as originally planned. There could have been changes that have not yet been made public. For example, I don't have enough information to guarantee that they won't delay dock removal until next summer. If I feel that something has changed to increase concerns regarding the species, I could revive this year's practices.
