The US Open at Chambers Bay starts today

I have been walking Chambers Creek Properties for years. I have been carrying a camera since 2009. With the US Open coming to the Chambers Bay Golf Course, which is part of the property, I have decided to share a picture each day for the 365 days leading up to the tournament. The US Open starts today, so I wanted to share one last picture, this time of the course.

I will concede that pictures of the Chambers Bay Golf Course are not among my priorities when walking around the property, but I do have a few.

You can see the course on Fox and Fox Sports 1 from today through the 21st. If there is a playoff, the schedule will extend to the 22nd. If you want more of my course pictures, I have them tagged as Chambers Bay. For all of my pictures in and around the park, I have my pictures tagged as Chambers Creek Properties.

I also wanted to mention that I have been working on a book that I intend to self-publish featuring Chambers Creek Properties. I originally wanted to finish by the US Open, but I have run into numerous problems including conflicting priorities. I'm not going to lie. This book will have a rushed feel to it when I finally finish. I'm also still a long way from completion.

Cliff Swallows (Petrochelidon pyrrhonota) nest reliably every year at the park. The best place to find them tends to vary. For those who want to see them despite the closures, I have some good news. They are currently nesting at the old mill along Chambers Creek Road.

While on my inflatable kayak trip to pursue the Martins, I obviously had to stop at our Osprey (Pandion haliaetus) nest. This is the first year that they have used this nesting platform. Because they keep getting evicted, this is their third home in three years. The upward angle at this nest makes it somewhat difficult to see inside, but mom is definitely up there. In the future, they are supposed to open a trail that will pass closer to this platform, assuming a developer doesn't throw off those plans.

I finally took my inflatable kayak to the beach on June 6 to check out our Purple Martins (Progne subis) during their first year without the old dock where they used to nest. Their numbers seemed smaller this year, but a female was seen carrying nesting material into one of the nesting boxes that were installed for them last year.

This is a young Pied-billed grebe (Podilymbus podiceps). I have seen them smaller than this, and I'm fairly convinced that they couldn't have flown to this pond near the Central Meadow restroom. I think that it's safe to say that they nested there.

Brown-headed Cowbirds (Molothrus ater) are seen infrequently during the summer months. Males such as this one have a brownish head that contrasts slightly with their black bodies.

Although the docks are gone, there are still a few places along the beaches to look for Cormorants. If you find one, it will most likely be a Double-crested Cormorant (Phalacrocorax auritus) like this one.
